Overview

This lesson plan has been developed as part of a strategy to use online Google maps for searching routes efficiently. Students will use a myriad of skills like searching routes, image-editing and multitasking to complete this activity. They will learn how to get a route from their home to school in Google Maps. Print Screen a website page, paste it into PowerPoint and crop the image. Their narrative skills are also called into play to describe each part of their journey to result in a descriptive and informative PowerPoint presentation.

1: Introduction
Introduce the lesson through lesson objectives

Formative assessment of existing skills – ask questions on how Ss have used Google Maps and PowerPoint before and to what extent.Presenting the lesson objectives

Show an example of the required completed PowerPoint showing the complete route from home to school.
Presents a constructivist teaching approach, building on previous knowledge and familiarity. Involve the students, ask them if they think the process is simple and easy to do. Ask how the process can be improved (keyboard shortcuts). Backwards-chaining technique allowing students to see what they can achieve and indirectly provide extrinsic motivation.

2: Demonstration
This is to teach the students step by step process to achieve the final product i.e. the route map.

Opening PowerPoint; opening Google Maps website using Google search engine
To aid the students in understanding what they will be doing, and how they will be doing it.If students see the purpose and the steps how to achieve, they will seem more interested in seeing it through to the final product, and most importantly, understand the techniques used to achieve the effects.

Introduction to Google Maps- Searching for home and schools addresses. Getting the right route.
To set the scene and the basic setup of Google Maps. Giving the source (home address) and destination (School address) to trace the route so that students can see the dotted lines showing the route. Involve students by asking them the route names.

Using Print screen Command to paste the route map toPowerPoint
Students learn the new command to Print a screen and paste it in PowerPoint. They also learn the term multitasking by switching from Google maps to Power-point applications.

Students learn the photo editing tool crop to cut the unwanted portions of an image.

Students try to create their route maps as instructed by the teacher with some guidance provided by the teacher

Students start by opening PowerPoint software and setting the layout

Open Google Maps, login using Gmail account, work out directions from Home to School. Take a Print-Screen of segments of the journey.
